Year 3/4 had a fantastic day learning about iron mining in the Cleveland area.
The day was split into two. In the morning children took a tour of the mining village to learn about how people in the 19th century used to live. They compared old photographs of houses, schools and landscapes to what they looked like now, standing in positions where olden day photos were taken.
In the afternoon, pupils were led down a drift mine to find out about the conditions of the workers and the quantity of iron stone they were expected to extract from the mines each day. Children were told about different jobs such as miners, fillers, horse boys and pay clerks.
They looked at artefacts and tools used by miners to plant gunpowder in the rocks and test for poisonous gases.
A huge thanks to the team who work at the Cleveland Iron Mining Museum.
