Heritage Stars throughout school!

Today, budding historians and geographers were recognised in a special assembly that marked the end of Heritage Week, a week that has seen in depth research, questioning and fact finding about Northallerton through the years.

Children from Reception to Year 6 have researched how Vikings used Northallerton (known then as Alverton) as a Wapentake (an administrative centre), how the Scottish army met the English army at a battlefield just north of here in 1138, how King Charles I was held here under house arrest in 1647 and how Northallerton was a key area to send evacuees from the local industrial or shipping areas near Hull, Sunderland and Gateshead.

Questions have been raised that, I’m sure, haven’t been asked before and children have impressed all adults in school by their knowledge and enthusiasm!

A challenge has been given to impart some of that knowledge to someone at home.

  1. A great week of learning all about the history of Northallerton. The children in Bees enjoyed dressing up as Victorian children and learning about old toys. 😀
