Exploring rivers with Rivers 2U!

Year 3/4 children have started their FLOW topic with a visit by the Rivers 2U van which is part of the Yorkshire Dales River Trust. Children were invited into the special van that has been adapted to include a model river bed. Children could track the flow of the ‘river’ from the source to a floodplain and were encouraged to use words such as deposition, meander and erosion. They ‘made’ rain on housing areas in the model and discussed how settlements can be affected by their location and what is being done to help communities who are affected by flooding.

Children also identified some creatures that had been carefully taken from a nearby river using pictures in the van to help them and discussed how pollution had an effect on the numbers of these invertebrates. Catherine from the Rivers Trust was a font of knowledge and answered some very challenging questions about the work she does, including how the Trust worked to keep local rivers clean.

A brilliant day where we all learned so much about the rivers in our local area and how important it is to look after them. Children were challenged to tell the adult at home what they had learnt so the message could be carried on.
