Medieval Egg Painting in Puffins and Penguins

The children have been making their own paint using egg yolk and natural dyes.  They used saffron and beetroot.  They even ground their own charcoal to make black paint!   Using the Lost Words poem “Wren” for inspiration they learned from artist Wendi New how to draw their outlines and paint.  Here are just a few of their fabulous pieces.

  1. The children have been learning from working with Ms New. The lessons have been based on the programme for the topic with some ‘expert’ assistance both the Applegarth staff and children have been gaining new knowledge about paint. The origins of paint and how people in the past made the colours. they have used science skills of observation to make their own paints from many natural materials. the muted colours are stunning. each child’s work is unique as Ms New skilfully developed each child’s creativity. They become more confident as they completed their own designs and do not try to reproduce someone else’s ideas.
