The Important Book by Margaret Wise Brown

Today Puffins and Penguins used a lovely book as a stimulus for their writing. We liked the simplicity and the pattern of the book – each page started by highlighting the most important thing about an item, then described it in more detail before repeating the first line again. We followed the model to write our own version, creating another class book.  Some children found today’s activity challenging but were able to use the metacognitive strategies we have been practising to help them. It was great to reflect on this at the end of the day, with children saying that they had been successful in the end because they had not given up, had a positive attitude and asked for help. Mr Tudor’s class were very impressed with the couple of examples we sent to show him; in fact they couldn’t tell the difference between the pages written by us and by the original author!

  1. Margaret Wise Brown was a classic American writer who also wrote Goodnight Mr Moon – if you ever need a strong for ‘bedtime’ this is a very special book.
I love the idea that ‘books can take you anywhere’.

  2. I like the discipline behind this idea and I love how vivid their imagination is with some of these points. Well done, Puffins and Penguins!
