Today I have been on a course learning all about communication and interaction. I’ve picked up some really handy tips for when reading with children which I can’t wait to try out at school and at home. ย As our school focus is on developing vocabulary these ideas might help.
When sharing a book with your child try asking them to:
– pick a word that they’ve not heard before (and talk about this)
– find a powerful adjective which describes something
– say a funny word (maybe in a funny voice!)
– think of a word which rhymes with a word in the text
– give their favourite word on the page – and the reason why
It would also be brilliant if you as parents can continue to encourage your child to ask if they don’t know what a word means – and you might be surprised with some of the words that you think they know but actually they don’t.
Help your children to love words by loving books – audio books are also fantastic if they’re not so keen on reading themselves.
Great ideas Mrs Jackson. I canโt wait to find out which class and children have been trying out these new ideas.
