Galileo Class – Science Week

Where’s the science in that?

Look out for all our amazing science work we will be doing this week. We will keep adding pictures throughout the week.

Monday

Today, Paul, who is a geologist, visited the class. He showed us a selection of rocks that he had collected. He told us about the three different rock types: sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic.

Paul told us that being a geollogist is like being a detective; you can find out what the earth was like in the past. A rock is like a history book! Surprisingly, Northallerton used to be swamp land with lots of plants and a much warmer climate. Sauropods and raptors roamed the land.

Classifying rocks

Tuesday

Bubbles, raisins, tomatoes and grapes!

Today we observed what happens when you put raisins into lemonade. Have a go at home. What do you notice? Where’s the science in that?

Wednesday and Thursday

Today Year 3 looked for science around them on their walk to swimming. This afternoon we thought about forces with folded paper and water tension and some groups observed what happened to a balloon when popping candy was mixed with lemonade. Children also made lemon tea.

Friday

Today, we made a wine glass whine. What happens when you add more water? Can you explain how the sound is made?

What do your fingerprints look like? How can police investigators uncover your fingerprint when you’ve touched something?

What happens when you light a tea bag? What causes it to rise?
