Turtle Talk- raising awareness

Sarah  Tucker ( Mrs Sadler’s niece) came into our school to talk to the Year 5/6 about her work volunteering with a turtle conservation charity in the Maldives.

She talked about the problems which affect marine environments : oil spills, sea temperatures rising, ghost nets, tourism, rubbish, etc.

She then  gave us some amazing facts about Tutles, for example: male turtles never return to land after they have hatched;  and only one in one thousand turtles will survive to adulthood.

She also told us some very disturbing facts about plastics: for example, a plastic bottle will take up to 250 years to decompose fully.

We also learned all about how injured turtles are rehabilitated and the work Sarah did in the Maldives to encourage and support others protecting and looking after the turtles’ environment.

We live a long way from the Maldives but we can still make a difference

We have learned so much and now we are keen to try and help so watch this space!

  1. I overheard some of the children talking about this. They were really inspired by what they had heard and want to find ways that they can help with turtle conservation.

  2. Sarah and the work she has been doing has certainly had a lasting impression on both the children and staff in school. The display in the hall is a testament to the leaning that year 5/6 did.
